Walk Report
Commencing celebrations for the 21st year of the Chesterfield Round Walk a group of 11 members set off from the White Hart pub car park for the first section of the walk. The first stop was made in front of the remains of Sutton Scarsdale Hall where a coffee break was taken followed by a group photograph cantered on the memorial seat. The seat is a tribute to the late Denis Ransby who was the main instigator and creator of the Chesterfield Round walk.
On reaching Owlcotes wood the group was treated to the sight of en masse bluebells not yet fully out but a very pleasing so early in the season. Passing through the village of Heath, (the name Le Heath can be traced back to 1257 but it was not until the 16th century that the village lost its original name of Lunt and became Heath), its origins can be traced back to the Doomsday Book of 1068. Paths, marked with the familiar Crooked Spire route markers, were followed through the restored areas of Holmewood and Williamthorpe collieries with a leisurely lunch being taken at Wolfie Ponds.
A slightly eventful walk alongside the mainland main line found the group at Clay Cross, the event referred to a completely blocked section of path; however this was overcome by a very determined group of Ramblers. After crossing Ryknild Street, (A61), a pleasant surprise awaited with sightings of Small White, Tortoiseshell, Brimstone and Peacock butterflies, obviously brought out by the warm brilliant sunshine. On reaching Woodland Way Old Tupton the group returned to the White Heart for drinks and a very pleasant conversation.
