Walk Report

Route taken:  Moscar House, Strines Edge, Strines Moor ridge, Foulstone Moor, Back Tor, Derwent Edge

A group of 20 walkers (including 3 guests from Rotherham, Scunthorpe and Ottawa!)  set off from the lay-by at Cutthroat bridge. The forecast was for a nice sunny day with a moderate wind.   The group crossed the A57 Manchester road –  normally quite busy but a little quieter today as the road was closed near Sheffield to repair a broken wall.

After crossing the Highshaw Clough the group climbed over a ladder stile on the way up to Moscar house before crossing Strines Moor. From here you could see some rock formations including the coach and horses on Derwent edge.  After a short tea break the group walked along Mortimer Road passing the Strines Inn.  Taking the Foulstone Road the group ascended through Foulstone Moor and up to Back Tor, the wind strengthening on the way up . Lunch was taken at Back Tor, it wasn’t easy finding a sheltered spot.

After lunch the group walked along Derwent Edge passing the rock formations that had been seen earlier on the walk. The wind continued to strengthen however stunning views of the Derwent and Ladybower reservoirs as well as Stanage edge and Win Hill could be seen. Upon reaching Whinstone Lee Tor the group turned to descend back to the starting point at Cutthroat Bridge.

Distance: 10 miles
