Walk Report
10 walkers and a dog completed this route, which took us through Shatton and Brough, along the River Noe to Castleton, and returned to our starting point on the north side of the Hope Valley. En route we passed two sites of historic interest, Navio Fort, dating from Roman times and Peveril Castle, built for William the Conquerer by a supporter. In Castleton itself, we crossed the town ditch, a one-time defensive structure, dating from the 11th century.
Throughout the day, we enjoyed fantastic views of the surrounding area, including Win Hill, Hope Brink and the Great Ridge. Most of the walking was straightforward, making use of tracks, field paths and minor roads; the challenge of the day was the climb from Hope up to and just beyond Twitchill Farm, on an eroded and incredibly steep path, but worth it for the views.
All in all, an enjoyable 9.7 mile walk, in good company.
