Walk Report

Amid blustery hail showers, interspersed with sunny spells, 10 of us made our way from Rowsley to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle on Stanton Moor, via Congreave and Stanton in Peak. There were good views of Haddon Hall along the way in spite of the changeable weather.

On the moor itself, the trunks of the silver birch trees glistened in the sun and the delicate tracery of their branches was silhouetted against the blue sky. We passed disused quarries and the iconic Cork Stone, a wind-weathered natural gritstone pillar.

Leaving the moor, we took a descending path though Barton Hill Quarries to Birchover, eventually reaching Barn Farm for a cold rain soaked lunch break. Our return route took us across Stanton Moor again and down through old quarry workings and abandoned millstones, to Stanton Woodhouse and back to Rowsley.

9 miles walked.
