The Chesterfield Round Walk is a 34-mile circular route that showcases the remarkable variety of landscapes surrounding our town.
From the wooded valleys and rolling hills on the edge of the Peak District to former colliery sites transformed into thriving country parks and nature reserves, the route offers a fascinating journey through both the natural and industrial heritage of North East Derbyshire.
With frequent views of Chesterfield and its famous Crooked Spire, it’s one of the best ways to explore the countryside on the town’s doorstep.
Walk It Your Way
The route is divided into six sections, making it easy to enjoy as a series of shorter walks.
Each section has convenient parking and public transport links, allowing walkers to complete the route at their own pace. You can walk individual sections, combine sections into longer days out, or challenge yourself to complete the entire circuit in one go.
The Chesterfield Round Walk is also featured during the Chesterfield Area Walking Festival each May. For those who do not wish to complete it in one go, the Chesterfield Ramblers are walking the entire route in manageable sections over four Bank Holiday Mondays.
Well Waymarked and Easy to Follow
The route is waymarked in both directions and follows a mixture of footpaths, bridleways, woodland trails, former railway lines and quiet country lanes.
Thanks to the work of volunteers and grant funding, the route has benefited from improved footpaths, bridges, gates, stiles and information boards over the years.
As some paths can remain muddy throughout the year, sturdy walking footwear is recommended.

Chesterfield Round Walk Sections
The History of the Chesterfield Round Walk
The Chesterfield Round Walk was researched and developed on behalf of Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Ramblers in 2005 by Rob Haslam, author of Walking South Yorkshire and the Sheffield Greenway.
The project was created to highlight the diverse countryside surrounding Chesterfield and encourage more people to explore the area’s extensive network of public footpaths.
The original guide, produced by Oak Leaf Graphics and illustrated by local artist John Morris, remains available today. While some practical information has changed over the years, the route continues to be enjoyed by walkers from across Derbyshire and beyond.
The Chesterfield Round Walk exists thanks to the dedication of many Ramblers volunteers who helped create, promote and maintain the route. Special thanks go to Dennis and Beryl Ransby, Geoff Bell, Gavin Johns and Sheila McCree, together with the many Chesterfield Ramblers members who continue to care for the route today.
