Walk Report
Using the lay by for Whitwell Woods as a start point the Saturday group first made there way through the village of Whitwell before climbing gently to the edge of the Limestone Quarry workings. Turing east the next point of call was the edge of Cresswell for a coffee break near the riding stables before continuing along Crag Road to enter the Cresswell Crags gorge. A few stops were made along the gorge to take stock of some of the many information boards for those of our members not familiar with the attraction. A short pause was made at the visitors centre before continuing on to the Welbeck Estate using Robin Hoods Way to pass between the two sections of Shrubbery Lake. Lunch was taken at South Lodge before turning north to head for Worksop using the very prominent wide trail through the forest section known as Manor Hills. After Oak Wood a sharp turn westwards was made to start the journey back first through Hodthorpe then on to Whitwell Village. Passing through the village the footpath through a field of Oil Seed Rape was then used to return to the lay by at Whitwell Woods. During the journey through the rape seed we were treated to a fine sighting of circling buzzards.
Picture by our new trainee photographer, not bad for a first attempt.
